Uncovering Vulnerabilities In Generative Ai: The Risks Of Exploiting Nonexistent Open-Source Packages

Recent research has uncovered a concerning vulnerability in the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI), specifically in the domain of Generative AI. This revelation points to a new method for threat actors to infiltrate enterprise repositories by exploiting nonexistent open-source packages, generated as hallucinations by AI models.

The study, conducted by Bar Lanyado from Lasso Security, delves into the implications of using AI models like ChatGPT to recommend code libraries. It was discovered that these models often hallucinate nonexistent packages when suggesting downloads to developers. This issue poses a significant risk as more developers are turning to AI chatbots for coding solutions rather than traditional search engines.

Lanyado’s investigation highlights the magnitude of this problem and warns of the potential for malicious actors to exploit these hallucinated names by creating harmful packages. As a precautionary measure, developers are advised to only download from trusted sources to mitigate the risk of installing malicious code.

One notable discovery from this research is a python package commonly dreamed up by various models known as ‘huggingface-cli’. The experiment involved uploading an empty package with this name to assess if developers uncritically download these recommendations. Shockingly, the fake package received over 30,000 legitimate downloads within just three months, underscoring the severity of relying on AI models for development tasks.

Further analysis revealed that several large companies, including Alibaba, either utilize or endorse the fake python package within their codebase. This unsettling finding emphasizes the widespread impact and potential consequences of depending on AI-generated recommendations in software development.

The study extended its scope by exploring different AI models and programming languages to gauge their reliability in generating accurate suggestions. Results showed variations in hallucination rates among different models, with Gemini exhibiting the highest rate at 64.5%. Conversely, GPT-3.5 had the lowest incidence at 22.2%, reinforcing the importance of evaluating model performance before adopting AI recommendations blindly.

In conclusion, while AI-powered tools hold promise in enhancing productivity, it is crucial for cybersecurity professionals and developers to exercise caution and vigilance when incorporating machine-generated suggestions into their workflows.
