Three years ago, BSH Home Appliances underwent a significant transformation in its IT structure by establishing a digital platform services team. This team was composed of three global platform engineering teams and four regional platform and operations teams. Berke Menekli, the VP of digital platform services at BSH, regarded this change as one of the most beneficial decisions made by the organization.

The prior infrastructure and operations teams at BSH primarily served as providers of infrastructure services to the software development groups within the European appliance manufacturer. However, Menekli identified a gap in operational excellence where these teams were predominantly reactive rather than proactive. With the new organizational setup, the platform engineering teams collaborated closely with agile-organized software development teams to offer proactive services like capacity planning, monitoring, and consulting.

At present, 300 to 400 platform engineering team members support BSH’s four product groups. This restructuring has resulted in faster software development, increased cost-effectiveness in operations, enhanced application reliability, and a substantial reduction in critical incidents from 50 per month to just 15 – marking a significant 70% decrease.

Platform engineering is gaining prominence in enterprise IT and is a key focus for many CIOs according to Bill Blosen from Gartner. Recent surveys conducted by Gartner revealed that 75% of organizations have adopted platform engineering; however, only 44% have established structured approaches emphasizing its strategic importance in enhancing developer experience and productivity.

Essentially, platform engineering teams are tasked with building and managing self-service platforms for internal software developers. These platforms are designed for scalability to boost developer productivity, reduce costs through economies of scale, ensure high reliability, accelerate software delivery while maintaining consistency across processes, architecture, security measures, and technical governance.
