Samsung Focuses On Expanding High Bandwidth Memory (Hbm) Chip Production To Meet Growing Ai Demands

Samsung is making significant strides in its High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) chip production, aiming to triple output this year. At Memcon 2024, SangJoon Hwang, EVP and Head of DRAM Product and Technology Team at Samsung, disclosed plans for mass-producing the fifth-generation HBM and 128 GB DDR5 products in sizable quantities during the first half of the year. This expansion aligns with Samsung’s goal to solidify its position in high-performance memory solutions during the AI era.

During Memcon 2024, Samsung also unveiled its groundbreaking HBM3E 12H chip – the industry’s first 12-stack HBM3E DRAM. Currently undergoing sampling with customers, this innovation follows Micron’s anticipated 24GB 8H HBM3E entry into mass production soon. Looking ahead, Samsung envisions advancements with future technologies like HBM4 and its sixth-generation ‘Snowbolt’ chip. The Snowbolt generation aims to improve efficiency by integrating a buffer die as a control device within the stacked memory layers.

Despite being a major player in memory chip manufacturing, Samsung has faced competition from SK Hynix in the HBM segment. To address this challenge and meet demands in the AI space where speed is crucial, Samsung has intensified its investments in ramping up HBM chip production capacity.

SK Hynix is not resting on its laurels either; it recently announced plans for constructing an expansive chip production facility at Yongin Semiconductor Cluster in South Korea. These ongoing developments underscore the fierce competition within the industry as key players strive to stay ahead in meeting the escalating demand for advanced memory solutions.

In conclusion, as Samsung accelerates its efforts to scale up HBM chip production and innovate for future generations like Snowbolt, it sets the stage for further advancements in high-performance memory technologies essential for powering AI applications effectively.
