Title: “Hanooman: Revolutionizing Ai For Inclusive Language Access In India”

At the Nasscom Technology and Leadership Summit 2024, BharatGPT, an initiative from IIT Bombay, in partnership with Vizzhy, its GPU collaborator, unveiled a cutting-edge generative AI named “Hanooman.” This innovative project is driven by a noble purpose – to harness the power of technology for the betterment of society rather than individual gain.

The collaboration between BharatGPT and Indian IIT Bombay on the Hanooman project marks a significant milestone towards democratizing AI in India. A key objective of this endeavor is to make AI technology accessible to individuals who do not speak English fluently. The upcoming release of the first set of open-source models comprising 1.5 billion, 7 billion, 13 billion, and 40 billion parameters next month is highly anticipated.

Notably, these multimodal models will be capable of interacting in 11 languages such as Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Marathi. The overarching vision includes providing language support for all 22 official languages spoken in India in the future.

Vishnu Vardhan, the head of Vizzhy, highlighted the stark contrast in economic landscapes between cities like Boston and Mumbai during the summit. He stressed the crucial role of fostering a scientific ecosystem to drive economic growth significantly. The initiative has grown to involve collaborations with seven IITs aimed at establishing a sustainable and innovation-centric AI environment within India.

Speaking about bridging linguistic gaps and enhancing inclusivity through AI advancements in Indic languages was Ganesh Ramakrishnan, a professor at IIT Bombay leading the BharatGPT initiative. He emphasized the necessity for a foundational model tailored for Indic languages to propel India onto the global AI map successfully.

The ultimate aspiration behind this groundbreaking project is to empower individuals and communities by transcending language barriers and promoting increased utilization of AI technologies across diverse sectors.

In addition to advancing generative AI capabilities in various languages, initiatives like People+AI are actively involved in developing open leaderboards for Indic large language models (LLMs) to foster continuous innovation and progress in this domain.
