Proof that even the most steadfast organizations are willing to embrace generative AI has emerged with the recent launch of an experimental initiative by the US Department of the Air Force (DAF). The initiative, known as NIPRGPT, is part of the Dark Saber software ecosystem developed at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Information Directorate in Rome, New York.

Dark Saber serves as an innovative platform bringing together Airmen and Guardians from across the DAF to create next-generation software and operational capabilities. Guardians, who are enlisted members of the US Space Force under the DAF’s umbrella, specialize in cybersecurity, network maintenance, and satellite communication management rather than zero-gravity combat.

NIPRGPT is an AI chatbot designed to engage users in human-like conversations while operating on the Non-classified Internet Protocol Router Network. This chatbot integrates with the Department of Defense’s Common Access Card (CAC) system, offering assistance with tasks like correspondence, preparing background papers, and programming.

Chandra Donelson, DAF’s acting chief data and artificial intelligence officer, emphasized the importance of hands-on learning with technology for warfighters to shape future decisions in policy-making and investment. The NIPRGPT experiment aims to assess generative AI’s computational efficiency and security compliance through real-world testing.

Currently, AFRL is exploring self-hosted open-source language models within a controlled environment without user input refinement. User feedback will play a key role in shaping policies and influencing future procurement discussions.

As Alexis Bonnell, AFRL CIO stated, NIPRGPT acts as a vital transition to provide advanced tools while commercial solutions navigate stringent security protocols. Ongoing experimentation with these tools will enhance skills readiness among Airmen and Guardians for forthcoming advanced technologies.

While DAF remains open to collaborating with government entities, industry experts, and academia for optimal performance on specific tasks and use cases tailored for tomorrow’s challenges. The focus lies on ensuring AI models’ suitability instead of committing to a single model or vendor group prematurely.

IDC’s government trust and resiliency strategy research manager Aaron Walker highlighted potential concerns around data exposure or misuse due to human error or malicious intentions despite NIPRGPT operating on non-classified networks. However, he acknowledged its potential in threat intelligence reporting, malware analysis, policy suggestions, security data aggregation, code generation alongside other practical applications.

Walker suggested that allowing civilian agencies to refine emerging technologies before implementation could benefit defense agencies like DAF in terms of resource utilization and skill development. Despite potential risks associated with sensitive information mishandling by users interacting within NIPRGPT interface on non-classified networks.
