Title: China Takes The Lead In Generative Ai Patents, With U.s. Following Suit

China Leads in Generative AI Patents, Followed by the United States

Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Daren Tang, recently highlighted China’s significant lead in generative AI patents globally during a press conference at WIPO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. According to WIPO, China has far surpassed all other countries in patent requests related to generative AI, with the United States following as a distant second.

The report revealed that over the past decade leading up to 2023, there were about 54,000 inventions linked to generative AI. The rapid growth and interest in this technology became evident as more than a quarter of these inventions surfaced just last year. The surge in patent applications serves as an indication of the increasing focus on generative AI innovations and their potential impact.

Specifically focusing on Generative AI (GenAI) inventions from 2014 onwards, the data showed that China dominated with over 38,200 inventions, significantly surpassing the United States with nearly 6,300 patents. South Korea, Japan, and India also made notable contributions to GenAI innovations during this period.

GenAI technology enables users to create diverse content including text, images, music, and computer code through various tools like ChatGPT from OpenAI and Ernie from Baidu. This revolutionary technology has found applications across multiple industries such as life sciences, manufacturing, transportation, security, and telecommunications.

While GenAI presents promising opportunities for efficiency and innovation across sectors worldwide, concerns have been raised regarding its potential impact on job displacement and fair compensation for content creators. WIPO emphasizes that the sheer quantity of patents does not necessarily reflect their quality or transformative value for society at this early stage of GenAI development.

Daren Tang expressed WIPO’s commitment to monitoring the evolving landscape of generative AI technologies to provide valuable insights into its development pathways globally. As global leaders like the U.S. and China continue their advancements in artificial intelligence technologies such as machine learning models and foundation models like GPT-4 and Gemini from Google among others; it is clear that these innovations are shaping the future of various industries worldwide.
