Title: China Surpasses United States In Generative Ai Patent Filings

China has emerged as a frontrunner in the field of generative artificial intelligence inventions, surpassing all other countries by a significant margin. Recent data from the United Nations indicates that China has filed six times more patents related to generative AI than the United States.

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) reported that over 50,000 patent applications focusing on generative AI were submitted in the past decade. Generative AI models are capable of creating various forms of content such as text, audio, images, code, and music.

In particular, the number of patent applications for generative AI has surged in the last year, with a quarter of the total applications being filed in 2023 alone. WIPO Patent Analytics Manager Christopher Harrison highlighted that generative AI is a rapidly expanding field that shows no signs of slowing down.

Out of the over 50,000 patent applications received by WIPO between 2014 and 2023, China accounted for more than 38,000 applications. In contrast, the U.S. only contributed 6,276 generative AI patents during the same period.

Amongst the top five countries in terms of generative AI patent applications were South Korea, Japan, and India. Notably, India saw a notable increase in patent filings within this sector.

An interesting finding from WIPO’s report was that Chinese companies were actively involved in this surge of generative AI patents. ByteDance Ltd., the owner of TikTok, was one of the most prolific organizations in terms of filing patent applications.

While China leads in patent numbers related to generative AI inventions, experts caution that this data does not provide a complete picture. According to Nestor Maslej from Stanford University’s Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, factors like model quality and origin are crucial considerations in assessing global leadership in AI development.

The U.S., for instance, has excelled in publishing advanced machine learning models and leading developments in large language models like OpenAI’s GPT-4o and others from prominent tech companies such as Google and Meta Platforms Inc.

Despite China’s dominance in certain aspects of generative AI innovation, WIPO anticipates a significant increase in patent filings worldwide over the coming years as this technology continues to evolve rapidly and impact various industries across different sectors.
