For example, Amazon had to withdraw an AI recruitment tool in 2018 after it was discovered that it favored men due to being trained on data from previous hires, which mainly consisted of men. While some researchers argue that AI can reduce bias in recruitment processes, others contest this notion. University of Cambridge researchers found that using AI to narrow candidate pools can actually increase uniformity rather than diversity in the workforce, as it tends to search for the employer’s “ideal candidate” based on potentially irrelevant criteria.
