This technology has proven to be beneficial for cybersecurity careers, as it automates threat data analysis and allows professionals in this field to concentrate more on mitigating risks. Given the number of high-profile breaches we have witnessed recently, such as MOVEit and Johnson Controls, cybersecurity experts can undoubtedly use all the assistance available.

Generative AI serves as a powerful tool for identifying new risks and alerts; however, its utilization necessitates a unique skill set. As someone who interviews candidates for cybersecurity positions, I specifically look for three critical soft skills: lateral thinking, persistence, and communication.

Although many job descriptions emphasize problem-solving abilities, thinking outside the box is imperative in the field of cybersecurity. Candidates must be capable of swiftly adapting when addressing risks and threats in real-time. For instance, an excellent candidate with lateral thinking skills will consider how emerging technologies like generative AI can augment existing resources to quickly identify security risks and streamline operations.

Moreover, candidates must possess the ability to pivot promptly when facing risks and threats in real-time. With all its benefits, generative AI also introduces concerns regarding data security and privacy that cannot be disregarded. While candidates should know how to leverage this technology to their advantage, they must also comprehend how large language models (LLMs) can exploit and compromise internal organizational data. Unsurprisingly, almost half of executives are apprehensive about integrating generative AI due to potential attacks against their AI models, services, or data. Therefore, security professionals need to proactively question how new threats can circumvent existing tools and processes. They should constantly seek innovative approaches to challenges by adopting the attacker’s perspective or discovering new vulnerabilities.

To assess whether a candidate possesses lateral thinking skills, interviewers should focus on situational questions that demonstrate how applicants utilized different resources to overcome challenges in the past. A commonly asked question that gauges lateral thinking is, “Can you tell me about a time when you faced significant ambiguity or had limited information, and how did you take action in that situation?”

Overall, the incorporation of generative AI into various job roles offers numerous advantages but also requires individuals to possess specific skills and considerations. Cybersecurity professionals must be adept at utilizing this technology while being mindful of potential risks to data security and privacy. By seeking candidates with lateral thinking skills and the ability to adapt in real-time, organizations can ensure they have the most proficient cybersecurity teams to combat evolving threats in the digital landscape.
