The global data center sector is experiencing exponential growth due to the widespread adoption of cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI), according to the Global Data Center Outlook Report from JLL. The report indicates that the demand for data center capacity to support AI is rapidly increasing. Most research reports predict that the global data center market for AI will grow at a compounded annual growth rate of over 25% during the forecast period.

To shed more light on the impact of AI and the boom of data centers, Eric Hui, Director of Business Development for Asia Pacific at Equinix, shares additional insights. He explains that data centers need to be equipped and ready to handle the distribution of API models required for AI applications. These models require large amounts of training data, necessitating the consolidation of data lakes and pools within data centers. Hui emphasizes the importance of new data center locations to cater to customers’ distribution needs.

Notably, major cloud providers have also adopted generated product sets and prioritize direct connectivity with providers to ensure optimal service quality. Distribution is another focus area as AI models need to be distributed across different locations to enable seamless consumption and continuous learning.

Challenges and opportunities arise in adopting AI-ready data centers. Hui highlights how specialized hardware and software players, along with subscription models for specific resources, emerge alongside computing infrastructure developments. Equinix is committed to covering electricity consumption with renewable energy sources reaching 96% by 2022 and aiming for 100% renewable energy across their global portfolio by 2030. Looking ahead, Hui envisions data centers evolving into insight centers through the transformation of aggregated data into actionable intelligence.
