Manufacturers adopting manual labor to meet their manufacturing needs may be missing out on the benefits of automation. Universal Robots (UR) is sharing the advantages of automating through collaborative robots, also known as cobots.

Adam Sobieski, the regional president of Asia Pacific at Universal Robots (UR), stated that adopting industrial robots is like jumping into the deep end of automation, while continuing with manual labor is like wading in the shallow end. Collaborative robots offer a more manageable option for manufacturers looking to automate incrementally.

One key benefit of deploying cobots instead of traditional industrial robots is their flexibility. Cobots can be easily relocated and reassigned to perform different tasks, providing manufacturers with greater adaptability. In contrast, industrial robots require significant financial investment and are less versatile.

Safety is another advantage of cobots. These robots are designed to work closely with human operators, minimizing the need for additional safety measures. This collaboration between humans and cobots enables safer working environments.

Cobots are also simpler to operate, set up, and learn compared to conventional industrial robots. Their user-friendly interfaces and intuitive programming make it easier for operators to control and utilize them effectively.

Despite the numerous benefits offered by cobots, there are still reservations within the manufacturing industry about integrating them into factory lines. McKinsey & Company reports that automation has the potential to increase global productivity growth by 0.8% to 1.4% annually.

In Malaysia specifically, there is room for improvement in automation adoption within the manufacturing industry. The country’s robot density per 10,000 employees falls below the global average, despite the sector contributing 24% to Malaysia’s GDP.

To unlock significant productivity gains and stay competitive in today’s rapidly evolving business landscape, manufacturers should consider embracing cobots as part of their automation strategies. By leveraging these collaborative robots’ flexibility, safety features, and simplicity of use, manufacturers can achieve increased efficiency and enhance their overall manufacturing operations.

In conclusion, collaborative robots offer manufacturers a more manageable and incremental approach to automation. The benefits of cobots include flexibility, safety, and simplicity of operation. Despite some reservations within the industry, embracing cobots can lead to significant productivity growth and ensure competitiveness in the manufacturing sector.
