SmarTone, a leading mobile operator in Hong Kong, has recently launched a new program called the “SmarTone 5G Ednovation Programme.” The aim of this initiative is to assist schools in Hong Kong in embracing 5G technology and enhancing teaching efficiency through tailor-made smart campus solutions. By incorporating these innovative solutions, SmarTone hopes to ignite students’ passion for STEM learning.

Currently, the program is running as a pilot in three schools: HKSKH Bishop Hall Secondary School, Kowloon Bay St. John The Baptist Catholic Primary School, and Man Kwan Pak Kau College. Norman Tam, the deputy chief executive officer of SmarTone, expressed his excitement about the program’s potential impact on education by saying, “With 5G smart campus solutions in place, we are expecting a boost in overall quality of teaching and learning, with better teaching efficiency and more interactions in learning.”

Since introducing its 5G services in Hong Kong, SmarTone has been actively promoting digitalization among corporations by leveraging the endless possibilities of 5G applications. With the new ednovation program, SmarTone aims to bring this same innovation to the education sector. The smart campus solutions offered include not just learning systems but also comprehensive smart administration and class management systems.

One school participating in this program that stands out is HKSKH Bishop Hall Secondary School. As part of their involvement, they have implemented a “5G Smart Hydroponics Planting System” on their campus. SmarTone played a vital role in helping the school secure funding for this system through the Office of Communications Authority’s Subsidy Scheme for Encouraging Early Deployment of 5G.

The 5G Smart Hydroponics Planting System consists of multiple sets of high-resolution cameras and sensors that allow students to monitor plant growth via livestreams. Artificial Intelligence (AI) analyzes water conditions, humidity, and temperature to provide valuable advice on plant care. Additionally, a separate batch of cameras is set up for real-time system monitoring.

What makes this project unique is that it not only enriches the variety of STEM classes but also cultivates students’ knowledge of planting while fostering an awareness of environmental protection and a sense of responsibility. Norman Tam believes that through initiatives like this, students’ interest in technology will be stimulated, leading to the nurturing of more technological talents essential for Hong Kong’s smart city development.

Apart from hydroponics systems, HKSKH Bishop Hall Secondary School has also implemented a “5G Power-Saving Classroom.” This solution connects IoT equipment to the 5G network and allows teaching staff to control lighting, ventilation, air-conditioning, and AV systems using their mobile phones or gesture-controlled interfaces.

The program extends its reach beyond HKSKH Bishop Hall Secondary School. Kowloon Bay St. John The Baptist Catholic Primary School has converted an outdoor classroom from a bus and equipped it with IoT facilities connected to the 5G network. Lighting inside the room is controlled by sensors that automatically turn on when teachers or students enter. Additionally, air conditioners and projectors can be easily controlled via remote access.

At Man Kwan Pak Kau College, SmarTone has developed a “5G Smart Terrarium” for raising turtles. The facility includes various monitoring devices and sensors responsible for collecting real-time data on water contamination and abnormalities in water levels. Staff members can even control lighting and temperature systems remotely while calculating the number of viewers concurrently observing the terrarium.

SmarTone has expressed its commitment to collaborate with more schools and organizations in the future to co-develop diverse and innovative 5G smart campus solutions. With these efforts, SmarTone aims to pave the way for Hong Kong’s transformation into a smart city.
