Generative AI continues to attract significant attention from investors, with companies raising substantial amounts of capital to further their ambitions. One such company is See Together, a startup focused on creating open source generative AI and AI model development infrastructure. The company recently announced the successful closure of a $102.5 million Series A funding round, led by Kleiner Perkins and featuring participation from Nvidia and Emergence Capital.

The funds raised in this round, which is more than five times the size of See Together’s previous funding round, will be utilized to expand the company’s cloud platform. This platform enables developers to build using open and custom models, offering flexibility and freedom from vendor lock-in. With the increasing release of powerful generative models on a regular basis, See Together believes that generative AI is becoming a platform technology that will have a long-lasting impact on society.

See Together was launched in June 2022 by co-founders Vipul Ved Prakash, Ce Zhang, Chris Re, and Percy Liang. Prakash is no stranger to the tech industry, having previously founded social media search platform Topsy, which was later acquired by Apple. With See Together, the founders aim to provide organizations with open source models and services that facilitate the incorporation of AI into their applications.

To achieve this goal, See Together has developed a cloud platform that offers scalable compute at lower prices compared to dominant vendors like Google Cloud, AWS, and Azure. The company’s cloud operates across data centers in the U.S. and EU while providing customers with around 20 exaflops of compute power in total. Notable clients include Pika Labs, NexusFlow, Voyage AI, and Cartesia.

By leveraging custom infrastructure, See Together can offer more cost-effective solutions for pre-training and inference workloads. Developers can easily integrate leading open source models or create their own through pre-training or fine-tuning using the Together AI platform. The company’s industry-leading performance and reliability make it an attractive choice for customers who want to retain ownership of their AI investments and have the freedom to run their models on any platform.

In addition to its cloud services, See Together also offers Custom Models, a consulting service that allows customers to bring their own data to the Together cloud platform. The company’s team collaborates with clients in designing, building, and testing customized models tailored to their specific needs.

See Together places significant emphasis on AI research and has already embarked on several projects. One notable initiative is RedPajama, which aims to develop a set of open source generative AI models similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. See Together has also released fine-tuned versions of other text-generating models, including Meta’s Llama 2 and GPT-JT, a fork of EleutherAI’s GPT-J-6B. OpenChatKit, an attempt at creating a ChatGPT alternative, is another project the company is actively pursuing.

With its focus on open source models, cost-effective compute solutions, and investment in AI research, See Together is positioning itself as a leading player in the rapidly evolving field of generative AI. As startups and enterprises seek to build generative AI strategies that offer choice and flexibility, companies like See Together are poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of AI applications.
