Samsung Unveils Samsung Gauss: A Generative Ai Model For Local Device Integration

Samsung has introduced its new generative AI model, Samsung Gauss, which is set to be integrated into the upcoming Galaxy S24 handset in 2024. The Gauss model is capable of generating and editing images, composing emails, summarizing documents, and assisting with coding. What sets Gauss apart is that certain components of the model can run locally on the device itself, aligning with Samsung's goal of incorporating generative AI into core functions of their mobile devices by 2024. The integration of Gauss could provide a unique selling point for the Galaxy S24 by allowing limited local execution of generative image and language models on the device instead of relying solely on cloud-powered models. While not aiming to match the extensive services provided by ChatGPT, Samsung aims to enhance natural communication through their Bixby virtual assistant. Currently used internally for employee productivity purposes, Samsung plans to expand the applications of Gauss across various products in the future. The inclusion of Gauss in the Galaxy S24 could potentially revolutionize user-device interaction and deliver an enhanced AI experience.

Samsung Unveils Generative AI Model, Gauss, for Local Device Integration

Samsung has recently provided insights into its new generative AI model called Samsung Gauss. The model is expected to be integrated into Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S24 handset in early 2024. During a recent AI forum, Samsung demonstrated the capabilities of the Gauss model, highlighting its ability to generate and edit images, compose emails, summarize documents, and even assist with coding.

The unique aspect of Samsung’s Gauss model is that parts of it can run locally on the device itself. This approach aligns with Samsung executives’ earlier promise to incorporate generative AI into core functions of their mobile devices by 2024. Notably, rumors prior to this announcement had already hinted at Samsung’s focus on AI technology for its Galaxy S24.

Named after Carl Friedrich Gauss, a renowned mathematician known for establishing normal distribution theory as the foundation of machine learning and AI, the Gauss model consists of three components: Samsung Gauss Language, Samsung Gauss Code, and Samsung Gauss Image. According to Samsung Research, these components enhance work efficiency by facilitating tasks like composing emails, summarizing documents, translating content, and smarter device control when integrated into products.

This integration could serve as a significant selling point for the Galaxy S24 if it enables limited local execution of generative image and language models on the handset itself instead of relying solely on cloud-powered large language models from entities like OpenAI.

While already implementing generative AI in its Bixby virtual assistant for home appliances, Samsung acknowledges that it won’t match the robustness of ChatGPT. Miyoung Yoo, vice president of Samsung Electronics’ home appliances division clarified this in September by stating that they are not attempting to provide such an extensive service. Instead, they aim to create more natural communication by enabling Bixby to understand conversation context even without explicit commands.

Currently used internally for employee productivity purposes according to Samsung, the Gauss model is expected to expand its applications to provide new user experiences across various Samsung products in the near future.

As Samsung pushes boundaries with its generative AI capabilities, the inclusion of Gauss in the Galaxy S24 could revolutionize how users interact with their devices and enjoy a seamless, AI-enhanced experience.
