Not to be left behind in the race for AI dominance, South Korean electronics company Samsung has unveiled its own generative artificial intelligence (AI) model, Samsung Gauss. This announcement comes shortly after OpenAI’s launch of GPT-4 Turbo. Samsung Gauss will be integrated into the Galaxy S24 handset in the first half of 2024 as part of Samsung’s efforts to enhance its product offerings and reduce reliance on competitors’ large language models.
Samsung Gauss is a versatile AI model that responds to user-generated prompts similar to ChatGPT. It consists of three divisions: Samsung Gauss Language, Samsung Gauss Code, and Samsung Gauss Image. These divisions enable the AI tool to generate text, code, and image responses.
Samsung Gauss Language aims to improve productivity by helping users write and edit emails, summarize documents, and translate languages. On the other hand, Samsung Gauss Code incorporates an interactive code assistant called code.i, which assists developers in quickly writing code by providing code descriptions and test case generation.
Furthermore, Samsung Gauss Image has the capability to create and edit images similar to OpenAI’s DALL-E. It can generate unique and lifelike visuals while also improving the resolution of existing images.
This move by Samsung signifies its commitment to incorporating AI into its core strategy. The company has already integrated generative AI into its Bixby virtual assistant for home appliances earlier this year. By localizing the processing power of Samsung Gauss on their devices, including the upcoming Galaxy S24 handset, they aim to sell 35 million units next year and potentially surpass Apple and other leading manufacturers in smartphone sales.
While it may not have the same name recognition as rivals like ChatGPT and Google Bard, Samsung Gauss sets itself apart by prioritizing productivity through comprehensive language functionalities. Additionally, it differentiates itself from other AI models with its emphasis on privacy as an “on-device AI.” This means that data will be processed on the device itself, avoiding security concerns associated with cloud processing. This approach also allows for greater customization and energy efficiency compared to conventional generative AI alternatives.
