The Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chip by Qualcomm is set to bring performance upgrades and on-device generative AI to smartphones just below the top tier. This latest mobile chip from Qualcomm is the second one to feature on-device generative AI. It aims to make this innovative technology more accessible by introducing it into more affordable handsets.

Several manufacturers, including Honor and vivo, will be using the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 in their phones, with the first devices expected to launch later this month. At Qualcomm’s recent Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii, the company emphasized that on-device generative AI would be a key differentiating feature for phones equipped with the latest Snapdragon chips in 2024.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, already incorporated into Xiaomi’s 14 Series phones available in China, enables generative AI features such as creating new images from prompts using Stable Diffusion and expanding photos beyond their original borders. While it remains unclear whether the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 will possess identical generative AI capabilities as its more powerful counterpart, Qualcomm has not provided clarification on this matter at the time of publication.

However, regardless of the chip’s generative AI capabilities, its implementation will ultimately depend on individual manufacturers. They will have the freedom to decide how much of this capability they want to incorporate into their respective phones using the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3.

On-device generative AI brings certain advantages over cloud-based solutions. It offers lower latency since there is no need to send queries to external server farms for answers. Additionally, it can consider personal information like behavioral patterns without offloading data and can work even in areas without cell signals. Moreover, handling tasks locally can contribute to better privacy and security.

In addition to generative AI enhancements, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 also boasts other improvements compared to its predecessor. Like other recently announced Qualcomm chips, it features an upgraded neural processing unit designed specifically for handling generative AI tasks. The chip delivers a 15% increase in speed compared to last year’s Snapdragon 7 Gen 2, offers 20% better power efficiency, and supports fast recharging from a dead battery to 50% capacity within just five minutes. Notably, the 7 Gen 3 introduces spatial audio with head tracking to the 7-series for the first time.

Qualcomm’s decision to continue using the Kyro CPUs, which have been employed in higher-end mobile chips for some time, may change next year. There are rumors of a potential switch to the new Oryon CPU featured in Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite chip for PCs. The company stated at its recent Snapdragon Summit that Oryon CPUs would likely be integrated into chips across various product lines starting with mobile devices in 2024.

Honor and vivo are among the first manufacturers partnering with Qualcomm to release phones equipped with the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chip. It is expected that more devices, particularly from Xiaomi (such as the Xiaomi Redmi Note) and realme (like the GT Neo 5 SE), will feature this chip next year. Looking ahead, other manufacturers may also adopt the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 in subsequent years. For instance, Motorola currently uses a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chip in its Razr 2023 model. Therefore, it may eventually opt for Qualcomm’s new chip in future premium devices as it aims to strike a balance between cost and performance compared to more expensive flagship smartphones running on cutting-edge silicon.
