Procter & Gamble (P&G) has unveiled its new internal generative AI tool called chatPG. This tool, developed in beta mode and officially launched in September, is designed to have similar capabilities as off-the-shelf models but with stronger intellectual property safeguards.

CIO Vittorio Cretella explained that P&G has already been investing in AI, having introduced a bot based on a foundational model in 2022 to assist cloud engineers. This investment allowed the company to experiment with different generative AI tools as the trend gained popularity after the debut of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

The chatPG model was built using OpenAI’s API. To protect data privacy, P&G added additional safeguards to ensure information from prompts did not train other models or become publicly available. Cretella emphasized that while generative AI presents significant opportunities, it is essential for employees to review and take accountability for any content or draft produced by the AI tool.

The implementation of generative AI at P&G aims to increase productivity and enhance the overall experience for both employees and customers. From onboarding to supporting call center operators, there are over 35 use cases where this model is being complemented with internal data.

P&G recognizes the importance of educating its employees about appropriate use cases for generative AI. Workers are required to complete a mandatory 10-minute training session on the subject and sign an acceptable use policy afterward. Despite the powerful capabilities of generative AI, P&G emphasizes that accountability and content ownership remain with the employee.

Cretella sees his role, along with other IT leaders’, as connecting the dots between AI capabilities and business implications. He firmly believes that humans will not be replaced by AI as long as efforts are made to facilitate collaboration between human skills and machine capabilities.

In terms of scalability and efficiency, P&G operates what Cretella refers to as an “AI factory” that is used across 80% of the company’s global business. This factory enables rapid deployment of machine learning solutions, resulting in a tenfold increase in speed. P&G leverages this structure to test different versions of models and adapt them to specific regional requirements.

For companies interested in embracing AI but lacking the resources for a substantial investment, Cretella recommends identifying pain points in the machine learning and development process and automating them.
