A new training program is being launched by IBM and the GSMA (mobile industry body) to support the development of generative artificial intelligence (AI) skills within the telecoms industry. The program, called GSMA Advance’s AI Training, aims to equip telco leaders with the knowledge and skills needed to leverage generative AI technologies effectively.
The training program will cover a range of topics, from foundational AI principles to specialized applications in the telecoms sector. Participants will have access to Watsonx, IBM’s AI and data platform, which will provide hands-on training. The sessions will be held at IBM offices in major cities such as Dubai, London, Mexico City, New York, and Seoul throughout the year. Additionally, an online training program available in multiple languages will be offered.
One key aspect of the training program is its focus on business strategy and technology basics related to generative AI. It aims to help architects and developers understand how to implement practical AI solutions using Watsonx. By offering this digital version of the program, IBM and GSMA hope to enable telecoms industry professionals from around the world to benefit from it.
In addition to this training initiative, another program called the GSMA Foundry Generative AI program will give members of the industry group access to IBM’s Watsonx platform. This collaboration aims to support telecoms players in exploring industry-specific use cases for generative AI. By doing so, they can drive cost leadership, revenue growth, and overall improvement in customer experience.
According to research conducted by IBM, 40% of surveyed telecoms firms are already exploring or experimenting with generative AI technology. Furthermore, 45% have accelerated their rollout plans for AI across their operations. Another study by GSMA Intelligence revealed that 56% of operators surveyed are actively trialing generative AI solutions – a higher rate compared with other priority technologies.
Generative AI has vast potential within the telecoms industry. It can help launch new services, improve connectivity, and enhance customer experience. The Chief Technology Officer at GSMA, Alex Sinclair, emphasized the importance of democratizing AI to ensure that all parts of the connectivity industry and their customers can benefit from it.
Aside from its use in customer-facing chatbots, generative AI has various applications in telecoms. For instance, it can ingest data from manuals used during network installations to provide interactive guidance and simplify tasks. Telco operators can also utilize large language models to understand network behavior for capacity planning or issue detection.
The training program offered by IBM and GSMA will undoubtedly empower telco leaders with the skills and knowledge needed to leverage generative AI effectively.
