Google Introduces Generative AI to Enhance Search Experience
Google is taking its search engine to a new level by incorporating generative artificial intelligence (AI) into its platform. The search giant is now offering users the ability to generate images and text using AI technology, providing unique ways of finding, visualizing, and creating content.
The rollout of Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE) began on October 12th, targeting select users in the United States. This update represents the culmination of years of work aimed at making the search engine smarter and more intuitive. By leveraging generative AI, Google aims to enhance the overall user experience and offer fresh ways of discovering information.
With SGE, Google users can generate images and text by entering a prompt into the search bar. Similar to other AI-powered text-to-image generators like Midjourney and DALL-E 2, SGE acts as a rival to Microsoft’s GPT-4 powered Bing Chat. This feature will be particularly helpful when traditional search results fail to provide the desired image or when users need assistance in visualizing an idea.
Users who opt-in to SGE will have the option to create AI-generated images directly within Google Images during the testing phase. This feature will appear when users are searching for inspiration, such as “minimalist Halloween table settings” or “spooky dog house ideas.” Users can then modify the description to further refine their results and bring their vision to life.
Google’s SGE isn’t limited solely to image generation. It also enables users to generate written content. If someone is seeking home improvement advice, for example, they can ask SGE to “Write a note to a contractor asking for a quote to turn my garage into a home office.” SGE will draft a note based on this prompt, which users can revise as needed. These notes can then be exported to Google Docs or Gmail.
To address concerns about the appropriate use of generative AI and AI-generated content, Google is implementing safeguards. Images generated by SGE will be watermarked and contain metadata indicating that they were AI-generated. Additionally, a tool called “About this image” is being developed to provide users with more information about the context and credibility of images.
As SGE evolves, Google envisions it playing a crucial role in situations where users require contextual or situational information while shopping or searching for local services. By utilizing its Shopping Graph, SGE will provide product details like reviews, prices, and images to help consumers compare options effectively.
Furthermore, SGE will be instrumental in serving ads in search results. Although the precise role of generative AI in advertising remains unclear, Google assures users that ads will be prominently labeled to distinguish them from organic search results.
