Amazon, known for revolutionizing the shopping experience with its vast product offerings, is now making its way into the car industry. Teaming up with Hyundai at the 2023 LA Auto Show, Amazon announced its plans to start selling vehicles on its website in the second half of 2024.

Initially, Hyundai vehicles will be the focus, with other brands to follow later in the year. This new section on Amazon.com will enable customers to conveniently browse and shop for cars in their area based on various preferences such as model, trim, color, and features. Once they have selected their desired vehicle, customers can proceed to check out online using their chosen payment and financing options.

The great news for consumers is that they will have the choice of picking up their purchased vehicle from a local dealership or opting for delivery. While Amazon already offers car accessories and an “Amazon Vehicle Showrooms” site where manufacturers can advertise their vehicles, this marks a significant shift as customers can finally make actual purchases rather than just researching.

According to Amazon, this new car buying experience aims to provide convenience while also benefiting dealerships. In fact, it is structured in a way that still involves dealerships as the sellers of record. By partnering with Amazon, dealerships will gain exposure for their selection and offer added convenience to their customers.

During the LA Auto Show announcement, Mike Sullivan, president and owner of multiple LA-area dealerships including Hyundai Santa Monica location expressed his support for this initiative: “We’re now partnering with one of the world’s leading digital retailers. They’ve led the way in delivering customer convenience, and now they’re going to help us take our customer experience to the next level. Amazon also brings massive reach and marketing power to connect to more customers. We can’t wait to get started.”

This collaboration between Hyundai and Amazon goes beyond just selling cars online. The companies also revealed that Hyundai will utilize Amazon Web Services as its preferred cloud provider. Additionally, starting in 2025, Hyundai’s upcoming vehicle models will integrate the popular voice assistant Alexa.

As the automotive industry continues to evolve, this move by Amazon and Hyundai is a clear indication of their commitment to reinventing the car buying experience. By leveraging technology and embracing e-commerce, they aim to meet customer demands for convenience and personalization.
